Types of Tickets

A standard 2 Business Days locate request has two full business days to complete the locate marking, not including the day the request is made. This excludes Saturdays, Sundays, and the six legal holidays that Montana Dig Law excludes.  If the legal holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the preceding Friday or following Monday will be excluded.

A request for a locate in which there is a critical need to begin excavation as soon as possible prior to the legal start date. Montana Law defines this critical need as “to alleviate a condition that constitutes a clear and present danger to life and property; or repair a customer outage involving a previously installed utility-owned facility.” The excavator will notify the Montana 811 Call Center. This locate request is when an excavation must be done as soon as possible (or at a specific day/time prior to the legal start date), usually a crew is already on site. Note: Work scheduling problems are not considered an Emergency. False locates can be prosecuted the same as making a false 911 call. If you are in doubt as to your type of locate needed, please call 811 for clarification. Emergency locate requests must be called in.

A request for a locate and mark that is requested based on the perimeter boundary of an agricultural field; by a property owner or excavator prior to agricultural activity or to conduct soil probing.

Requests After Initial Ticket Has Been Issued

A request to add additional information to the locate request that does not relate to the dig location: such as mentioning there is a dog in the backyard, correcting an incorrect fax/phone number, needing locators to call and clarify their marks, etc. Locate requests will retain the same ticket number.

A request to remark the locate marks of a dig area prior to the ticket 30 calendar day expiration date. This request has the same requirements as a standard 2 Business Days locate request. The original ticket number will be referenced, but a new ticket number will be issued. Usually requested when the marks are no longer visible (i.e. snow has covered the marks, digging has destroyed the marks, etc.)

A request to remark the locate marks of a dig area after the ticket 30 calendar day life has expired. This request has the same requirements as a standard 2 Business Days locate request. The original ticket number will be referenced, but a new ticket number will be issued. Commonly requested when the marks are no longer visible (i.e. snow has covered the marks, digging has destroyed the marks, etc.)

A request to modify and/or revise the original dig location, continuation of a job, or used when and existing ticket is now an emergency. The original ticket number will be referenced, but a new ticket will be issued.
